Tokaji wine – Hungarian wine at its best

Tokaji wine is probably the most well-known among Hungarian wines, it is said that Tokaji wines are the original sweet white wines of Europe, consumed by people as famous as Pope Pius IV, King Louis XIV and Queen Victoria.

The name “Tokaji” (meaning “from Tokaj) comes from the wine region of Tokaj, a charming small town at the crossing of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. Tokaji wines are known to have wonderful richness and taste with the strength of 10-11%. These Hungarian wines are best served with cheese, chocolate, fruits and light desserts.

Tokaji wine – types:

  • Tokaji Aszú (a.k.a known as Tokay): world-class white dessert wine with unforgettable sweetness and taste. (Read more about Tokaji wine here)
  • Tokaji Aszú eszencia: exclusive nectar made of aszú berries with high levels of sugar in it. Very unique and special beverage with the strength of 5-6%.
  • Tokaji Szamorodni: the word “szamorodni” originally meant “self-made”. When you taste Szamorodni, you will feel the flavour of Aszú, because botrytised grapes (“aszú-grapes”) are used along “healthy” grapes during production. Szamorodni comes in dry and sweet versions depending on the sugar concentration.
  • Fordítás, Máslás: during the production of these wines residual aszú-dough was used to give the great aszú-flavour.
  • Tokaji Hárslevelű, Tokaji Kövérszőlő, Tokaji Furmint, Tokaji Sárgamuskotály: these dry Tokaji wines are named after the type of grape they were produced of
